Masterpieces That Have Inspired My Art

Years of drawing, painting, creating and designing means I have developed my own very strong and unique visual voice. But, I still love to gaze at the work of other creatives. I appreciate how their use of colour, texture, paint application and subject matter can give a unique perspective into how they see their world. 

I love to wander the dimly lit art galleries, quirky antique shops and watch the art auctions, especially those in the UK and Europe where distance makes any visit a much more considered destination. I'm intrigued by story behind the art collector who has owned the piece. And, where it has lived since the artist painted the very last brush stroke. 

Did you know that Magritte’s instantly recognizable image of a man wearing a bowler hat has set a new auction record in the UK? Some paintings, such as Lucian Freud’s Sleeping by the Lion Carpet are offered for the first time at auction, having been held in a private collection since being first acquired from the artist or the representing art gallery. So an auction can often mean an artwork which has never been widely exhibited before, is for a short time, on public view.

Artists such as Gustav Klimt and Amedeo Modigliani are always inspirational. But, of course, there are many others whose works don't get millions of dollars at auction but just as meaningful to see in person.

I've bought quite a few artworks at auction myself. Not Sotheby's. But those local, fund-raising charity auctions that are exciting, fast-paced and help your community, while you get to take home a piece of artistic joy to hang in a favourite space. I've also donated my artwork to help raise much-needed funds for those causes I believe deeply in. 

My small divine feminine art collection has been strongly inspired by my travels through Japan and of course, Klimt's portraits, too. My hand-painted, gouache Divine Feminine Spirit painted in blue and gold on acid-free art board is a delightfully small work at 15 x 15cm (6 x 6in). 

Another inspiring artwork is Her Sacred Glow.  For me, there’s a quiet fire that lives within every woman. Not loud, not demanding, yet constant and sure. This is a small, original painting that captures that inner glow. I painted the piece to celebrate the feminine inner strength that inspires, the power that nurtures with her quiet confidence that will endure.

Watching over your home, your sanctuary, I hope she will illuminate the deep shadows of the solstice with a resilient, calming light.

These small spiritual works are highly collectable. I love that they a fabulous choice when hung in a group of 4 or 6.

If there's one message to take away from the value of beautiful paintings, it's their capacity to inspire, to share ideas and to create your own perfect sanctuary, which remains as powerful a reason to collect original art, as ever.
