As an Australian artist, I think there is something deeply moving about living with original art. Not just admiring paintings from afar, but inviting it into the rhythm of my daily life. So it becomes deeply part of the rooms I move through, the stories I tell myself and the atmosphere it creates. I see that as the quiet power of a painting. It's not just a decorative choice for a space, it's gives presence, warmth and meaning.
My collection of original art is created with this in mind. My work is intensely grounded in the present, reflecting a genuine passion for making artwork that feels alive, approachable and connected to the everyday art collector. These are paintings that do not ask to be separated from real life. Instead, they are made to fit effortlessly into it, becoming part of the personal story of the people who live with them.
This connection to the present begins in nature. My creative process starts with time spent outdoors, observing the beauty and wonder of the natural world. I sketch and sometimes photograph birds and plants, gathering visual references that later inform the drawings and compositions. There is a sense of attentiveness in this practice, a willingness to slow down and notice the details that might otherwise be overlooked. It is this careful observation that gives my work its sense of authenticity and life. It is also what I love to share with students who attend my creative art workshops, too.
Before a design collection takes shape, I sketch and experiment with colours, materials and media to define the direction and style of the project. Texture, image and atmosphere all come together at this stage, helping to establish the visual language of the collection. Once the theme, palette and style are decided, I play with individual designs, each one created to build upon the previous sketches. I love creating a wide range of artwork that complements each other with a unified aesthetic. This balance between variety and cohesion is part of what makes creating my work so compelling.
My inspiration reaches beyond the natural world and into the wider creative landscape. I loves visiting art galleries, artisan markets and funky design stores, where ideas can be found in unexpected places. I have always found inspiration from bold modernists, such as Matisse and Picasso, artists known for their fearless use of colour and form. Their influence can be felt in my love for expressive composition and confident visual impact.
My fascination with Australian art and design adds another creative layer. Long inspired by the work of Margaret Preston and Margaret Olley, both of whom contributed distinct and lasting voices to Australian art, I visit the Tweed Regional Art Gallery regularly. In pattern and design, I look to William Morris, whose mastery of ornamental design is the go-to for so many creatives. For me, these references speak to a creative world that values both individuality and tradition and understands the timeless appeal of balance, beauty and a strong design language.
The result is a body of work that feels considered, contemporary, and deeply human. My original paintings offer more than visual interest. They offer a way of living with art that feels natural, generous and meaningful.
